Kellie Nightlinger's Bio:

I am warm hearted and love to help other people; especially children in need. I started Angels Among Us Youth Camp for children who have lost a parent, are in or have been in foster care, or have been in abusive homes, or suffer from disability. Angels Among Us Youth Camp is free for the campers and is funded by myself. I was the third person to ever swim the Straits of Mackinac. It is a 5 mile crossing from causeway to shore but I swim 6.75 miles from shore to shore and with strong currents pulling me off course at times. I have swum it 5 times so far. I usually swim without a wetsuit in 57-65 degree water. I swim to help raise awareness for Angels Among Us Youth Camp. I started Angels Among Us Youth Camp after the premature deaths of several very close friends: Steve Acker, Midland, MI, Doug Pacholka, Sanford, MI, Riley Scott Sumner, Chelsea, MI, Matt Tuttle, Chelsea, MI Sheila Herring, Detroit, MI, and Ryan McCandless, formely of Midland, MI. I wanted to do something for my friends who left this world before their time and for their precious children they left behind. I feel it is my responsibility to help those I can. Angels Among Us Youth Camp affords children the opportunity to go to an adventure-based camp who would not otherwise have the opportunity. The campers learn to kayak, wilderness camp, spelunk, snorkel, rock climb, make native crafts, study wildlife ecology, learn outdoor ethics, learn wilderness survival skills, cliff dive, throw and make atl atls and long bows, swim, bike ride, etc. The children become a family as they share a past with common threads. They learn that they are important and that they can achieve anything that they set their mind to do. The Angels Among Us Youth Camp volunteers share their passions with the campers to make camp an unforgettable experience. The children give me far more than I ever give them. They have enriched my life and they are my family. I love all of them dearly. I also started an outdoor mentoring group called Wild Child Forever. I mentor youth year-round on outdoor topics and field trips engaging them in the outdoors. On a personal level, I can survive happily in the wilderness with little tools. My favorite time is spent in the remote wilds of Canada living off of the land and eating wild plants. I am more at peace in the wilds of the world than anywhere else. I love my friends and family but my true love and my true teacher is Mother Earth herself. I have had an adventure guiding company called U.P. Wide Adventure Guide where I took people kayaking, spelunking in MI's only cave, snorkeling 1800-era shipwrecks, bear hunting, deer hunting, cross-country skiing, winter-camping, skijouring, wilderness adventuring, etc. I only give cave tours since moving to Alaska.
